GUIDE & COUNTER : Vol`Jin - The Witch Doctor

April 5, 2008 |

Early Game:
Lvl 1 ~ 6

ITEMS :

Ring Of Basilus, Lesser Clarity Potion, Flask Of Sapphire Water

Ring Of Basilus will give a +65% Brilliance Aura which is quite useful at your case because of your low starting mana. The flask and clarities are only backups if you received some nukes or you’ve used a skill to harass a hero.

STRATEGY :

Try to go into a lane with a melee hero, or a hero with no strong nukes like Zeus, Lina, Lich etc.. as much as possible, creep denial should always be your first priority, the creep killing is 2nd to your list.. If you decide to harass a hero at lvl 3 Paralyzing Cask and a lvl 1 Death Ward on your hand you can do so, Jst clean up the melee creeps then try to keep the ranged creep alive so the casks should bounce only on the two units.. ( hero & creep ) most melee hero stay on the back of the ranged creep so they can get exp, thats the right opportunity for you to do your job.. at lvl 3 Paralyzing Cask it can bounce 6 times meaning, 3 sec disable for your enemy hero and sufficient time to cast a Death Ward. Remember dont cast the Death Ward in front of the target, cast the ward at his back meaning, you should cast it in a place he would surely go to flee..

Lvl 7 ~ 11

Items :

At this time you should now have Claymore & Blade Of Alacrity

Strategy :

Its now time to dominate every creep wave that you encounter, Dnt be greedy to hero hunt already.. We havent created the core items for our sexy doctor. You must also have maxed out your Paralyzing Casks, because when its maxed out, thats the only time you will enjoy its full potential.. Its time to farm for the core items, this is how you throw the Casks for every creep wave.

Mid Game:

Lvl 11 ~ 16

Items :

In this point of the game where almost all heroes in the game is coming up with their hard earned items. You must already have these :

   1. Ring Of Basilus
   2. Boots Of Speed
   3. Lothar’s Edge

Strategy :

At this point of the game.. Try joining in a lane with a hero that has a skill that can disable an enemy hero.. We’re doing this for additional gold for our Soul Booster, plus extra exp. Try harassing the hero in your opposing lane as much as you can because this is where money can be smelled in the air.. I’ve told you where to cast the ward, now ill teach you how to channel a spell without getting stunned.. Unless, you’re opponent is Earthshaker, Sand King, Anub’Arak, Lion and other heroes that has an AoE stun skill. SInce you have a Lothar’s Edge now, this is how you execute it perfectly.

OMG! Where did that vet go?? He left his ward here.

   1. You already know the first step right? Clear the creep and let the ranged creep of the opponent be the last creep standing.
   2. Throw up a Paralyzing Cask on the hero, then try to go at his back as fast as you can.
   3. While feeling the effect of the casks, cast Maledict on his area.
   4. Cast the Death Ward in a place as show on the diagram above.
   5. Activate your Wind Walk by left-clicking the Lothar’s Edge on your inventory.
   6. Avoid moving! It will stop the channelling process.

This type of combo is quite effective for stunners like Vengeful Spirit, Sven, King Leoric, Chaos Knight and other heroes that needs their stun to be targeted to a unit to work. Not on an area only.

Late Game:

Lvl 17 ~ 25

Items :

Ahh.. The finale.. I think at this point you now obtain Aghanims Scepter and Boots Of Travel. ( why not Power Treads instead? ) Vol’Jin mainly focuses on his skills.. Not his attack, while when having Boots Of Travel you gain +90 movement speed and allows you to teleport onto a friendly non-hero unit.

Strategy :

Eventhough Vol’Jin can be a 1on1 hero killer.. You need to cooperate to your teammates in order for your team to beacome triumphant.. DotA focuses mainly on teamplay. So always keep that in mind. Dont be so greedy going into a lang ganking a hero eventhough you think you can handle him, Obtaining Boots Of Travel, Aghanims Scepter, Ring Of Basilus and Lothars Edge in this late game situation doesnt mean that youre weak because you only have 4 items in your inventory.. Nah.. Wrong.. Lets recap the items that you got.

Lothars Edge

    * Anti stun when channeling a Death Ward

Additional Tips :

If you’ve already have these core items, Try putting on a Necronomicon ( Staff Of Wizardry + Belt Of Giant Strenght ). Its a good handy dandy tool kit in your pocket. With summons that can attack the targeted hero while your hiding channeling the Death Ward. Lvl 3 Necronomicon summon has the True Sight ability. So you wont need any gem if you face an invisible opponent. Plus.. It grants additional str ( at all levels ) meaning, additional hp.

Lvl 1 Necronomicon : +10 strength & +21 intelligence

Lvl 2 Necronomicon : +16 strength & +36 intelligence

Lvl 3 Necronomicon : +24 strength & +45 intelligence

Its a great luxury item to add into your list.
